A Century of Mendele Symposium

Chair in Yiddish Literature and Culture and Professor of Jewish Literature at Hebrew University

Sunday, October 22, 2017
Jones Room - Woodruff Library, Emory University

"Yiddish Orality in the Age of Digital Reproduction "

Did the advent of sound recordings and radio diminish the aura of Yiddish orality by commodifying it, schmalzting it up and dumbing it down, or did the new technology give it new life, not to speak of a vastly new audience? Beginning with Sholem Aleichem’s recorded comedy monologue of 1915 and ending with a feminist Yiddish podcast from Tel Aviv, this lecture will present the live voices of Yiddish literature and culture, religious and secular, highbrow and low, as they wished to be preserved and disseminated.

This event is free and open to the public. Guest will have the chance to speak to Roskies at a reception following the lecture. Free parking available at the Fishburne Parking Deck.
