Stella Suberman's The Jew Store: A Family Memoir and Jewish Atlantic Migrations

For decades, “Jew Stores” -- Jewish-owned dry goods stores in small rural towns in the US South -- were liminal spaces where Americans of African and European ancestry, Jew and gentile, regularly met. Jew Stores have been a locus of pedagogy for scholars of the Jewish immigrant experience as well as US racial struggles. What can we learn from the first woman’s memoir of a Jew Store? What is the potential for undergraduates to teach these histories via digitally published archival research and ethnographies?
