2017 TIJS Conference

March 27 - 29, 2017

Emory University

As part of a series of events making the 40th anniversary of Jewish Studies at Emory University, the Tam Institute for Jewish Studies (TIJS) is proud to host “Looking Outward: Reframing Jewish Studies,” a scholarly conference designed to both assess the current state of Jewish Studies and propose some bold new directions for future work. This conference brings together 14 scholars from a variety of colleges and universities across the country who are pushing the boundaries of the field by engaging with scholarly paradigms not traditionally employed in relation to Jews, viewing Jews in relation to and in comparison with other groups, exploring unconventional contexts for Jewish life, and asking how Jewish Studies scholarship can help challenge and reshape some of the larger assumptions and approaches of the contemporary academy. The aims of the conference are rooted in the belief that Jewish Studies scholars have both much to gain and much to offer in looking beyond familiar limits.
