Prof. Rustow received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in 2004. Her research interests include medieval Jewish and Near Eastern history; conversion, heresy and methods of exclusion; medieval political culture; and documentary sources in Hebrew, Judeo-Arabic, and Arabic, especially from the Cairo Geniza. Her publications include Heresy and the Politics of Community: The Jews of the Fatimid Caliphate (Cornell University Press, June 2008); "Karaites Real and Imagined: Three Cases of Jewish Heresy," Past & Present 197 (2007); Scripture and Schism: Samaritan and Karaite Treasures from the Jewish Theological Seminary Library (New York: Jewish Theological Seminary, 2000); dissertation: "Rabbinate-Karaite Relations in Fatimid Egypt and Syria: A Study Based on Documents from the Cairo Geniza."
