Emory Acknowledges Dental School Discrimination

Sparked by a display in the “Jews at Emory” exhibit curated by Prof. Eric Goldstein in MARBL in 2006, Dr. Perry Brickman, well-known Atlanta dentist and leader of the Jewish community, began exploring the details of the antisemitic discrimination he had experienced at Emory’s dental school in the 1950’s, when Jewish students were systematically flunked out or forced to repeat one or more years of their dental education. Brickman sought out other Jewish students who had similar experiences at the Emory dental school and recorded their stories.  The resulting interviews were brought to the attention of the current Emory administration, eventually culminating in a remarkable event on the evening of Wednesday, October 10, 2012, when President James Wagner apologized to a number of individuals who had been wronged, and to the entire Atlanta Jewish community, for the discriminatory actions of Emory dental faculty. Brickman’s research materials also formed the basis for a gripping documentary, From Silence to Recognition: Confronting Discrimination in Emory’s Dental School History, which was produced by David Hughes Duke and John Duke and was shown to an audience of more than 500 guests at the October 10 event.

The ceremonies were covered by a number of news outlets:
