Carly Schreiber
Degree and Year
BA in Psychology and minor in Jewish Studies 2016.
Why did you decide to become a Jewish Studies major/minor?
I was always interested in Jewish history, but most of my interactions with it prior to Emory were in Hebrew school growing up. When I realized that I could make my interest a minor, I started supplementing my psychology degree with as many Jewish studies classes as possible.
Post-graduate education:
New York Law School (JD degree)
Tell us a bit about your current professional role:
I am currently a 4th year associate at Allen Overy Shearman Sterling US LLP in the Funds and Asset Management group. I work with investment managers and sponsors on the organization of their investment funds.
What was a favorite memory or experience at Emory related to Jewish Studies?
Learning about the Holocaust from the world-renowned Deborah Lipstadt was and still is one of the most interesting experiences I’ve had. I also would be remiss not to mention how the Arab-Israeli conflict class with Ken Stein profoundly impacted my world view and I often go back to my final paper when looking for certain facts to share when having discussions or debates with people.
How has your Jewish Studies Degree impacted your career?
While in law school, I was looking for ways to incorporate some of the Jewish studies knowledge I had taken from Emory into my career and was struggling. When I was provided with the opportunity to write a note for the law review, about any topic, I knew immediately that something related to Jewish studies would be what I wanted to write about. While it was not published, I chose to write about the intersection of Anti-BDS laws on the First Amendment and why such laws were not unconstitutional, as applied in certain circumstances. I drew upon my notes from my Arab-Israeli class and also upon the knowledge and history I had built through my minor in Jewish studies to help me write this note. While my minor does not impact my day-to-day in advising clients, I think the overall knowledge and the ability to have sometimes difficult conversations was reinforced through the Jewish Studies courses I took at Emory.
